Why Emotional Intelligence Is Important For Children?

Why emotional intelligence is important for children?

Do you ever wonder why some people are more successful in terms of their relationships and professional endeavors?

The answer to their success is Emotional Intelligence. It is essential to children’s brain development as it helps them form social skills, self-regulation, and a positive sense of self-worth.

By teaching children the basics of emotional intelligence, we train them to deal with their emotions so that they can create healthy relationships with the people around them. This is vital for leading a quality life.

But the question is how many parents are focusing on this topic? A survey by National Center for Education Statistics showed 80% of American Public schools noticed rowdiness and disrespectful attitude among kids in 2022. The pandemic has adversely impacted kids’ behavioral development.

“Emotional intelligence is the key to a successful and fulfilling life.” — said American author, Journalist, and psychologist Daniel Goleman.

According to Peter Salovey and John Mayer, Emotional Intelligence refers to the knowledge of understanding your and other’s emotion. Children can utilize this ability to manage their feelings and build stable relationships with others. People with high EQ handle challenging situations healthily and adaptively.

Scientists Raver, Garner, & Smith-Donald did a study to understand the effects of Intense EQ in children. They found kids with great emotional intelligence pay more attention to school work and engage themselves more in extracurricular activities. The researchers also noticed regulated behavior and excellent academic performance in those kids.

However, due to the covid pandemic, schools and parents are struggling to provide children with a healthy environment. With the help of emotional quotient, we can coach our kids to cope with difficult situations.

Reasons why Emotional Intelligence in Kids is important

A person’s ability to express and manage their feelings while respecting the opinions of other people is a sign of true emotional intelligence. Kids should start learning this skill at an early age because this is the stepping stone to success.

1. It boosts the creativity level of the kids

New studies suggest that emotional empathy can help enhance the creative side of your little one. They come up with innovative solutions by using their imaginations. Kids with high emotional intelligence can see one thing from different angles. Additionally, it boosts positivity in children which often results in a healthy mindset.

2. Makes the kid mentally strong and confident

The ability to perceive one’s emotions makes a child confident and strong-minded. The National Academies Press published a study, where they stated “Confidence is the key to success in various settings.” If you look up to today’s leaders like Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos, you will find two things in common. That is self-confidence and self-assurance. They understand the need of the people and is confident enough to solve them.

3.Learning positive social skills

Positive social skills include good manners, communication, and empathy. Emotional quotient assists in improving each area. It prepares the kid for the future.

4.Performs excellently in academics

Students with high EQ tend to perform a hundred times better on standardized tests compared to others.

5. Develops better relationships

When kids learn to handle conflicts peacefully, they create long-lasting bonds unknowingly. Emotional intelligence enables this opportunity for you. Children with emotional intelligence, are highly empathetic. It establishes trust and respect for their peers, finding it easy to adjust and sustain new friendships.

What can you do to raise an emotionally intelligent kid?

There are several ways parents and caregivers can support the development of emotional intelligence in children:

1. Ask them to express their feelings

Kids must be able to identify their emotions. Teach children how to communicate their emotions using words like “excited,” “thrilled,” “mad,” “shy,” and “upset.” If you can, prepare various faces for various emotions. Feelings will therefore be easier to express.

2. Validate their feelings and show empathy

Keep in mind that your issues are just as real to your child as they are to you. Something that looks insignificant to you might be enormous to your child. For instance, you might not place as much importance on following the crowd as an adult. But for your youngster, it may be a major issue to be perceived as “different” or not fit in.

3. Train them to turn in the direction of those who need their care

Humans occasionally require the attention of those in our immediate social circles. It could be brought on by work-related stress or a lack of motivation. Your child can acquire this behavior from you, helping them grow up to be emotionally mature adults. This attitude is strengthened by engaging in active listening and showing empathy.

4. Teach healthy coping mechanisms

Life is full of ups and downs. We should know how to deal with emotions to tackle complicated situations. You can use a coloring book, soothing music, or essential oil to engage the kid’s senses and calm their mind.

5. Help them to find ways to solve problems

Finding solutions is a crucial aspect of emotional intelligence. Assist them in identifying the answers. Ask them to evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of each solution. Encourage them to select the option they believe to be the best. Instead of solving problems, train to be a coach.

6. Model positive emotional expression and behavior

Children learn by observing and imitating the behavior of those around them. By modeling positive emotional expression and behavior, parents and caregivers can help children to develop their emotional intelligence.

Avoid these mistakes while teaching your child about emotional intelligence

  1. Avoid using shame or blame as a means of teaching emotional intelligence. These tactics may temporarily suppress negative emotions, but they do not encourage healthy emotional expression or understanding.
  2. Avoid dismissing or invalidating your child’s emotions. It’s important to acknowledge and validate your child’s feelings, even if you don’t agree with them or understand them.
  3. Avoid imposing your emotional expectations on your child. Each person’s emotional experience is unique and personal, and it’s important to allow your child to explore and understand their own emotions without pressure to conform to certain expectations.
